About Us
A Level 6A National Teaching & Referral Hospital with over a century of service
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has been in existence for more than a century, having been established in the early 1900s to cater for the health needs of the workers at the then port town of Kisumu. Since then, it has grown to become the referral hospital serving County, Sub-County, and private hospitals in more than 10 counties in the Western Kenya Region with a population of more than 5 million people.
In recognition of our growth, scale and national importance, JOOTRH has been elevated to a Level 6A National Teaching and Referral Hospital. This elevation positions us alongside leading national academic medical centres, with an ambitious plan to transform the facility into a 2,000-bed "Medicity" through a Ksh 4.9 billion ultra-modern facelift.
Our hospital provides comprehensive specialised care across more than 40 departments — from oncology, cardiothoracic surgery and interventional radiology to paediatrics, obstetrics and mental health — supported by a team of over 200 qualified doctors and more than 600 nurses.
